Chicken Diary (1)

Monday, November 7, 2011
Unexpectedly, they came into our life.

It was on an unexpected visit to a pet shop, making an unexpected decision to bring them home - a pair of bantam chickens, looking so white and timid.

When they first arrived in our house, we put them under a cover for a week, to prevent them from flying away. We bought chicken food from the pet shop and fed them. Everything went smoothly.

After a week, we let them out in the garden. During the day time, there was no problem.

It was only in the evening that we found them missing. We searched high and low in the whole garden but there was no sight of them. As the sunlight became dimmer, our anxiety grew. Just as we were about to give up hope, we heard some noise and looked up a tree whose branches towered over the fences and extended towards the outside and which is located just besides our fence. There they were, two of them, up on the tree, hidden by the branches, covered by the leaves. We were worried that when the morning came, they would jump to the other side of the fence and lose their way back to our home. So we fetched a ladder, climbed up and with much difficulty, tried to bring them down one by one. Fortunately, they did not resist. We placed them on a tree situated in our garden, away from the fence.

And the next day, we "trained" them about their sleeping place by placing them on the same tree. On the third day, they seemed to remember their sleeping place but the bantam hen had a problem climbing up. So we placed a stool right underneath the tree and up she went. Finally, they have settled down in our garden.
